Products Sold by Auctioneers

An auctioneer who sells products at auction on behalf of a business that owns these products is considered to have sold the products to the buyer. The products that the auctioneer sells are subject to tax or zero-rated, even if the business would not have been required to charge tax if it had sold them directly to the buyer.

The auctioneer – not the owner – is required to charge tax on the sale and account for it.

Of course, if the sale of the products is zero-rated, such as for export, the auctioneer does not account for any tax.
